The cable car creaks as it takes him higher and higher up the mountain, ash falling like rain and creating a veil through which Gavin struggles to see. He can feel the heat through the arm which rests at his side, pressed against warm glass.

It would be terribly unfortunate if the cable were to snap, he thinks, as another creak pulls him from deep thoughts.

It doesn't, and he steps off at the top to admire the plateau upon which one of the newest gym leaders conducted their battles. He had registered, as always, under an alias: Patrick Cavalli, a scientist and eager and up-and-coming trainer looking to run the gym circuit.

Though he was, in actually, quite indifferent to the idea of the gym challenge and mostly doing this to keep up appearances for his alias, the weather-based theme of Lavaridge's new gym intrigued him. He'd brought with him two of his favoured Pokemon for the occasion, their pokeballs secured at his waist as he approaches the open battlefield.

He slowly rises from his sitting position upon hearing the loud whirring sound of the cable car come to a halt. His blue eyes gaze off into the distance towards the man stepping out. This is the new challenger the newly appointed gym leader quietly thinks. With little else to do, he makes approaches slowly, carefully scrutinizing the man’s demeanor and attitude.

Stopping within an arm’s reach he looks over to the man. ”I am Ken.” he says plainly. ”I’m the gym leader here, I take it you’re the next challenger? I’ll need identification.” he stretches his arm outwards, twisting his wrist slightly to open his palm as he silently waits for the man to hand him his ID card.

His tone and expression is almost bored and completely apathetic towards his general surroundings. There wasn’t even a shred of a smile or emotion when he greeted the newcomer. Instead he stood there in an awkward silence after saying his piece.

Gavin studies the gym leader just as the man studies him, making silent observations all the while. The lack of emotion in his tone makes him harder to read, though the scientist is not bothered by this.[break][break]

Patrick Cavalli approaches openly and with a curt nod, stern features softening into a smile at the introduction.[break][break]

"Ken," he repeats, and sets his trainer ID in the man's outstretched hand. There are but two notable differences between the man and his picture: he does not have his glasses nor his smile in the latter. "Patrick Cavalli; I am indeed your next challenger."

He returns Patrick's ID card back to him after a careful inspection. Everything seems to check out, so he has no reason to object.

"You've chosen sandstorm for the challenge. As you're the challenger, you have permission to go first, or not should you so choose." he says rather blandly. The gym leader slowly returns to his post, taking out two pokeballs in the process. He tosses them out, bringing forth a Silicobra and a Garchomp in a single flash of light. He leans down and pets the small snake while giving the large dragon a nod.

He turns back to the blonde man, pointing at the two pokemon in front of him. "Seeing as you haven't obtained any badges yet, I'll give you a hint. You'll want to avoid hitting this small one here as it has a tendency of spitting up a storm. Zangai here specializes in hiding within a sandstorm." Saying his piece, he pulls out a small control, pressing it. Soon enough, the battlefield changes with sand and a few rock formations nearby.

As soon as introductions are through, Patrick's friendly expression gives way to a cool sort of confidence. He was an unknown challenger in the eyes of the league, but he'd gained his skills in battle through underground rings and fights to the death.[break][break]

"Thank you for the advice."[break][break]

He dips his head, then takes his place on one end of the battlefield as it takes shape, rocks rising from the earth.[break][break]

His Pokemon emerge, two glittering and unusual examples of their species. The golden Steelix coils like a rattlesnake, and the Corviknight beats its powerful metal wings to keep itself off the ground.[break][break]

"Magnet Rise. Iron Defense."[break][break]

A low hum cuts through the air as Steelix calls upon some kind of magnetic pull, slowly levitating off the earth in spite of her immense weight. Beside her, the Corviknight lets out a battle cry as its silver feathers harden.

Patrick’s confidence doesn’t go unnoticed as he can see it in the man’s cool smirk. Normally one would be intimidated by such a change in one’s demeanor, but he simply stares back with indifference.

Both the golden Steelix and the steely Corviknight are quick to set themselves up with neither taking any real action against the Silicobra and Garchomp. A critical mistake as a whistle is all that’s needed for the small snake to act. Its eyes glint red momentarily as it Glares at the metallic raven. A single look is all that’s needed to paralyze the giant bird.

”Now then… Zangai! Fire Fang!” The land shark crouches downwards, bending its legs before kicking off from the ground, catapulting it forward at the Steelix. Embers flicker out from its mouth as it suddenly darts into the air, the flames snuffing out as soon as they hit the sand below. Even in the air, its movements are swift, and its bite is even deadlier now that its fangs are wreathed in fire.

In only a few seconds, the Garchomp finds itself in front of the gargantuan serpent, ready to bear its fangs.

Corviknight's warbling cry alerts Gavin to its troubles as it finds itself paralyzed by the serpent's glare. Gavin has little opportunity to focus on the bird, however, as his Steelix is in immediate danger and lacking the support of its swifter partner.[break][break]

Knowing that Steelix won't be able to get out of the way in time, he adapts his strategy. Fiery fangs warp the metallic serpent's hide and it snarls in pain, a horrible sound that makes Gavin wince.[break][break]

"Strike back! Iron Tail! Corviknight, Drill Peck!"[break][break]

Writhing with a mixture of pain and fury, Steelix attempts to wrap its metal tail around the Garchomp and squeeze, not only aiming to hurt it but to hold it in place so that the slowed Corviknight might still be able to strike.[break][break]

The Steelix's retaliation is unexpected and dangerous for the land shark as rather than brutally swinging its tail, it chooses to coil it around the Garchomp's body. The dragon tucks its body and arms inwards to make itself a smaller target just before the Steelix can fully wrap itself around it. Still, the large metallic serpent manages to squeeze tight causing immense pain to the dragon.

Seeing its partner in trouble, the Silicobra is quick to Glare at the Steelix as well - forcefully paralyzing the larger Pokemon with the cold glint in its eye. Finding its chance, the Garchomp begins to Dig with great speed, burrowing into the ground to just narrowly escape the Corviknght's powerful beak.

tldr; garchomp was hit by iron tail!
silicobra used glare to paralyze steelix!
garchomp has burrowed into the ground! corviknight's drill peck misses!

Gavin is impressed by the gym leader's strategy thus far; his use of Silicobra has effectively stunted the efficiency of his team. Steelix, too, finds itself impeded by the onset of paralysis. Sharp hazel eyes scan the battlefield, taking in every observation.[break][break]

"After it," he orders Steelix, as the Garchomp burrows beneath the earth to escape Corviknight's sharp beak. To the metal bird, he orders, "Hone claws. Up, hold position."[break][break]

With a rumble and a shriek, the duo would attempt to carry out his orders. Should their paralysis not restrict them, Steelix would dig beneath the earth in pursuit of the Garchomp, and Corviknight would lift itself further off the ground and scrape its talons together, sharpening them for future use.[break][break]

His brows scrunch together after witnessing the Steelix dig after Zangai. He hadn't anticipated that the trainer would be so tenacious and stubborn, choosing to focus the entirety of his team onto the lone sand shark. Thankfully, Zangai's speed manages to overtake the larger pokemon; though it manages to maintain its course thanks to the tunnels left behind.

"Orochi, Sandstorm!" he commands the Silicobra as there's no time to waste. Slithering its tongue out, the tiny Cobra begins to spit dust from its mouth - the sand nearby picking by the tiny gales spat out. Sure enough, sand and dust begins to cover all around the battlefield as a proper sandstorm takes over. Picking up the change and previously hearing its trainer's voice from down below, the shark jettisons out from underneath, propelling itself out from the ground as it crashes its sturdy body towards the hovering Corviknight.

The Garchomp's ferocity is even greater now as it utilizes the sandstorm to it's advantage, making it more difficult to pinpoint.

tldr; Silicobra uses Sandstorm!
Garchomp uses Dig to attack Corviknight from down below!
Garchomp's ability Sand Veil is now in effect! It's evasion is increased by 20%!

As the sandstorm begins to whirl through the battlefield, Gavin feels a rare sort of excitement tickle in his stomach. There's something about the harsh weather conditions, and fighting to overcome them with his Pokemon, that thrills him.[break][break]

"Hold, Corviknight," he orders. He knows that the Garchomp's attack will barely affect the flying-type. "Defog!"[break][break]

Should its paralysis not prove too detrimental, the metal bird would flap its shining wings to beat back the dust and sand and clear the battlefield somewhat, reducing the evasion of the Garchomp.[break][break]

"Steelix, Iron Tail!"[break][break]

Erupting from the earth, still under the effects of its magnet rise, the Steelix would whirl in midair and attempt to slam its iron tail into the dual-type. It attacks with sheer force — negating any additional benefits of the move in favour of raw damage potential.[break][break]

He frowns as he watches Zangai take the brunt of the damage from all the attacks – Orochi’s niche already proving to have flaws. His opponent’s proving himself to be much more strategic in battle as he attempts to have his Corviknight lower the Garchomp’s evasion; however, as luck would have it, the poor metallic bird is unable to move due to its paralysis.

Seeing its chance, the Garchomp manages to dive away from the golden Steelix’s tail, reeling back as flames spew out from its mouth. It lunges at the massive tail, biting down with its enflamed maw – knowing away with its Fire Fang.

”Orochi, Headbutt!” he calls out to the small snake. It coils its body back then launches itself from the dirt like a missile, aiming to punt the large raven with its head.

Should its paralysis not prove too much of a hindrance, the metal snake would swipe its massive tail against a nearby boulder in order to break it apart and send the rocks toward its foe, driving back the flaming fangs of its opponent.[break][break]

It wouldn't do much damage, but Gavin knows he can't risk the super-effective attacks.[break][break]

Corviknight, on the other hand, without Gavin's sharp guidance, takes the headbutt from the snake and flinches back, unable to move.[break][break]
